Good African Coffee

Good African Coffee

I’ve just been to Waitrose and have bought a jar of coffee I haven’t seen before . The brand is called Good African Coffee and they have rather a nifty little website that is worth a look. The information on the jar states that 50% of the profits are invested in the growers and their communities. The front of the jar also states in big gold letters that ‘AFRICA NEEDS TRADE NOT AID TO FIGHT AGAINST POVERTY.’ What do you think?

Next time you see a teacher drinking a cup of coffee ask them what brand it is and if it is Fairtrade coffee?

Fairtrade Foundation

The Fairtrade Foundation has lots of great resources on its’ website which could help you with your extended learning. The Fairtrade film clips are definitely worth a look. They are short and to the point. The Bananas in the Dominican Republic has also got some rather catchy music. If you are planning to design a leaflet or create a presentation have a look at the photo library.

The Coffee in Uganda film links very nicely to the Coffee Chain game you played today.

Make Trade Fair film clips

Watch the film clips on Oxfam’s site to see some of the primary reasons to make trade fair. The clips are only a minute or so long.

Ethiopia and Starbucks – A Success Story.

Visit Oxfam’s Make Trade Fair site to see how campaigning and consumer power can bring about changes for the better.

Flower Power in Kenya. The flowers you buy from Kenya cost more than you think……….unless of course they are Fair Trade flowers.

The first episode of Millionaires’ Mission is tonight on channel 4 at 9p.m. Can they make the difference?

Rostow’s Model of Economic Development ?and test yourself to see how much you remember and if there are parts you don’t understand which you’d like me to explain again?

BBC Bitesize

The BBC Bitesize website has lots of excellent resources aimed specifically at GCSE students. Have a cruise through the link below then try a test bite – let me know how you get on.

 What is Development?

Where are you on the Global Rich List?

The Voices of Poverty is just one of the excellent resources on the Oxfam website. After the introduction you have the opportunity to view stories from  5 different people around the world, who are living in poverty but who have been helped by Oxfam. Whilst you watch and listen to their story ,you can also navigate the cursor over the screen so you can see where in the world they live and also key facts about their particular issue. I’d particularly recommend watching the film clips for Elisabeth and Daudi.

Oxfam also have a website specifically for students called Oxfam’s Cool Planet

Another chance to watch  the World in Miniature

Go to the A-Z index to select maps for your extended learning Worldmapper

Mind the gap on this website – Gapminder This website plots a variety of different indicators against GNP per capita. You can vary the indicator by clicking on the box in the bottom right hand corner which says size and then go to indicator and select a different development indicator. You will also notice that as you move the cursor over the graph you can identify the country and the specific value for the indicator you are analysing. If you are searching for a specific country use the bar on the right hand side of the page which lists countries.

Watch  a ‘Slum Insight’ to see just how real the ‘Development Gap’ really is. This film also makes the point that it isn’t good enough to just identify problems we need to also consider what can be done to improve the situation and then put theory into practice. As I often say,we aren’t whingey Geographers , we identify problems and then develop and evaluate solutions. Over the next couple of weeks we will consider a variety of ways which could help to reduce the drastic Development Gap which exists between MEDCS and LEDCS.
